THE ROLE OF VITAMIN A IN SKIN

Abstract


The vital biological roles of vitamin A compounds include regulating cell growth, cell differentiation, and protein synthesis which are beneficial for vision, preventing cancer, embryonic development, immune function, and maintaining healthy skin. Forms of vitamin A that have an active role are retinal and retinoic acid. Retinal plays a role in visual function, while retinoic acid plays a role in the skin. Retinoic acid as an active form of vitamin A on the skin can affect the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes. Therefore, skin diseases arising from vitamin A deficiency are associated with keratinization disorders such as phrynoderma, dermomatolacia, xerosis, xerostomia, hyposmia, and hypogeusia. Various studies have proven that vitamin A can maintain normal skin keratinocyte differentiation process, reduce the size and secretion of sebaceous glands, and act as an antioxidant. Therefore, vitamin A has been widely developed in the treatment of various skin diseases such as psoriasis, acne vulgaris, lichen planus, photoaging/photodamage, and skin malignancy.
